CREDO from William Byrd’s Mass for Three Voices
Canonici gives its premiere performances in Seattle and on the peninsula in Bremerton with our first concert of the season, Ave Maris Stella. This program features Marian music by two of the greatest Catholic composers of the Renaissance, Dufay and Byrd. Dufay composed some of his greatest Marian works for an ensemble of three voices as was the convention of the time. Byrd, however, choose this more intimate voicing for the private devotions of recusant families in a time when he and his colleagues more often wrote larger-scale music. Byrd’s Mass for Three Voices serves as the cornerstone of this Advent program, which also includes music by Leonel Power, Gilles Binchois, and Robert Fayrfax.
